Pence on higher education

Friends,

Earlier today, the Indiana Young Democrats learned about a "major policy announcement" from Congressman Mike Pence at Marion University from 1-2:30 PM tomorrow.  Indications are the announcement will focus on higher education policy.  We encourage our members to attend and highlight just how out of touch Congressman Pence is with Indiana students - we cannot allow his record to be swept under the rug during this election.

In Congress:
Pence Voted against cutting student loan interest rates in half
“The substitute would cut in half the student loan interest rate for borrowers that
are most in need. It would provide for year‐round Pell grants and repeal the single‐holder rule, which requires student borrowers to consolidate their loans with their existing lenders.” (H.R. 609, Miller amendment)

Pence voted twice for the Paul Ryan budget which “slashed” Pell Grants (HR 5652, H Con Res 34):
“Lawmakers yesterday approved 228‐191 a $3.5 trillion plan to overhaul Medicare, slash food stamps, Pell grants and other programs for the poor, boost defense spending and reduce taxes on high earners.”(Bloomberg 3/29/12)

Pence Voted against increasing Pell grants six other times:
H.R. 2669, McKeon amendment
H.R. 2669, College Cost Reduction Act of 2007
H.R. 2669, College Cost Reduction Act of 2007, Conference Report
H.R. 4137, To amend and extend the Higher Education Act of 1965
H.R. 4137, To amend and extend the Higher Education Act of 1965, Conference Report
H.R. 3221, Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009

The choice is clear for families of Hoosier students.  Follow these links to learn about the forward-looking plans for higher education proposed by President Barack Obama and Democratic Candidate for Governor John Gregg.

Thank you for your focus on this critical issue.

All the Best,
Sam Locke
