50 Years Later

“This is our hope... With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.  This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, ‘My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring.’”  The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Friends,

On this day, along with other partners for justice around the world, the Indiana Young Democrats commemorate the wisdom, bravery and steadfastness of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on this fiftieth anniversary of his “I Have a Dream” speech.

Fifty years later, his words still echo true.  The movement for justice, thanks to the vision of Dr. King, is now a global one.  It encompasses a continued fight for not just racial equality, but equality for all - regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or any of the other labels we use to divide compassion and create fear.

As these movements move forward, it is my prayer we are continued to be inspired by and students of the loving, peaceful and powerful way in which Dr. King carried out his remarkable vision.

All the Best,
Sam Locke
