Quietly disenfranchising student voters

Good evening!

It's been a long time since Indiana's legislature discussed House Bill 1311 but the ugly topic of disenfranchising university students is still lingering at Indiana's StatehouseThis Thursday at 10am, they'll be discussing it again, in Room 431.

If you recall, House Bill 1311's disenfranchisement language was shoved into a study committee-- the Census Data Advisory Committee. What's that, you ask? Well, the Committee is charged with, among other (Census related) things:

"(7) Mak[ing] recommendations concerning changes or amendments to IC 3 (the elections code) to the general assembly, including legislation for the implementation and administration of the Help America Vote Act of 2002"

"What can I do about it?"  Lots of options:

1.) If you're able, come to the hearing on Thursday at 10am -- the Committee will be taking public testimony and you should tell them that Indiana deserves better!

2.) Watch the hearing and Tweet or Facebook your side of things with the #DontDisenfranchiseMe hashtag.

3.) Make a phone call or write an email to both your State Rep and Senator! Tell them this study committee needs to leave disenfranchisement off the table for next year's session and ask for a follow up once the Committee is done for the summer. Hold these people accountable! Find your legislators here

Stay tuned for more action alerts on this issue in the future. Our fight is not over!
